On offshore oil and gas platforms, offshore wind facilities, and various types of vessels, helicopters play a vital role in personnel transfer, cargo transportation, and emergency rescue. As the primary operational area for helicopter take-off and landing, the helideck relies on supporting safety facilities to help maintain safe operations. Among these, the helicopter deck safety net is an important component in supporting safe helicopter operations.

The UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) publishes CAP 437, Standards for Offshore Helicopter Landing Areas, which serves as an important reference for the design and operation of offshore helicopter landing areas worldwide. In 2026, the standard was updated to the ninth edition, Amendment 01/2026, continuing to refine the relevant safety requirements.

Xinglun Rope has consistently followed the development of CAP 437 and its technical requirements. Previously, the company submitted proposed amendments to the CAA concerning helicopter deck safety nets. Through industry technical exchanges and discussions on standards, Xinglun Rope draws on experience gained in product development, manufacturing, and practical applications to provide practical reference for the improvement of industry standards and contribute its expertise to offshore aviation safety.

Functions and Applications of Helicopter Deck Safety Nets

Helicopter deck safety nets are primarily used on helicopter decks where applicable, helping to reduce the risk of slippage by improving the contact conditions between the helicopter and the deck surface.

When a helicopter lands on a deck, the friction between the net and the helicopter's landing gear helps provide grip, reducing the risk of slipping, rolling, or sliding during landing, take-off, or parking.

Although the structure of a safety net may appear simple, its design must account for multiple technical considerations, including material properties, mesh configuration, fixing methods, environmental resistance, and compatibility with different aircraft.

Key Design Requirements for Helicopter Deck Safety Nets

According to the relevant requirements of the ninth edition of CAP 437, particular attention should be paid to the following aspects when designing and installing helicopter deck safety nets.

01 | Mesh Size and Coverage

The mesh opening area should be between 400 and 900 cm². The net should cover the designated Touchdown/Positioning Marking Circle (TD/PM Circle) area, without obscuring important deck markings such as the helideck name and maximum allowable mass.

02 | Fixing Methods and Load-Bearing Capacity

The net should be properly laid, tensioned, and securely fastened in accordance with the installation requirements. The spacing between relevant perimeter fixing points is approximately 1.5 metres. Both the breaking load of the net ropes or webbing and the load-bearing capacity of the net anchorage points should be no less than 8.25 kN. The specific design should be verified against the applicable provisions and project conditions.

03 | Height and Aircraft Compatibility

The design should control the height of protrusions formed by the net and its knots to avoid potential interference with aircraft operations. CAP 437 explicitly states that helicopter deck safety nets are not suitable for helicopters equipped with skid-type landing gear. Actual use must comply with the applicable operational requirements.

04 | Material Selection and Durability

In marine environments, ultraviolet radiation, salt spray, seawater, wind, and rain can cause material ageing and performance degradation. Product design should therefore consider weather resistance, structural stability, connection reliability, and the requirements for subsequent inspection and maintenance.

Tips: Edge Protection Nets for Helicopter Decks

Safety netting facilities around helicopter operating areas are not limited to deck safety nets. Edge protection nets also play an important role in maintaining safety, primarily by reducing the risk of personnel or objects falling from the edge of a deck.

Their design should be evaluated in relation to the intended application, anticipated loading conditions, and installation requirements, with comprehensive consideration given to net strength, anchorage points, and overall protective performance.

Professional Manufacturing for Offshore Safety

For products related to offshore aviation safety, compliance with applicable standards is fundamental. Equally important is understanding the safety principles behind those standards and translating them into practical measures throughout product design, manufacturing, and application.

With extensive experience in specialist rope and netting solutions, Xinglun Rope continues to build expertise in material selection, net construction, connection and fastening methods, and adaptation to marine environments. The company also monitors the development of industry standards and feedback from practical applications, continuously refining its product designs and manufacturing processes.

Looking ahead, Xinglun Rope will continue to address the needs of offshore oil and gas platforms, offshore wind facilities, vessels, and other offshore installations by providing specialist rope and netting products alongside technical support. Through professional manufacturing and continuous innovation, Xinglun Rope aims to deliver reliable solutions that support safer offshore operations.
